WhatsApp Adds Bill Payments in India, Targeting 22,722 Billers

WhatsApp is rolling out a bill-payment service in India that lets users find, manage and pay household and utility bills inside the app, Meta said on September 3.

Users can open the service from the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen, then select a biller, confirm their account details, review the amount due and pay by UPI, debit card or credit card.

Payments Home saves previously used billers for one-tap access and can show bills in advance.

The report notes that users can manage several accounts with the same provider for home, office or family use, and that frequently used categories appear automatically.

Through Bharat Connect, formerly BBPS, the service covers 22,722 billers in 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, and credit-card and loan repayments.

The rollout is being phased across India, with access for Android and iOS users expanding over the coming weeks.

Arun Srinivas, Meta’s managing director and country head for India, noted the feature adds another everyday task to an app already used for many services. “No more juggling apps or tracking multiple due dates,” he said.

WhatsApp already supports phone recharges, metro-ticket bookings and government chatbot services in India, Meta said.

WhatsApp payments move money directly between bank accounts through BHIM UPI and local payment partners. Users enter their UPI PIN to authorise transfers. WhatsApp says it does not store card or UPI PIN details.
