PLYMOUTH, Mass. — The jury in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy told the judge Tuesday that it could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Judge William Sullivan sent the 12 jurors back to the jury room to continue their discussions.
Around 9 a.m. ET on the fourth day considering the charges, the jury resumed deliberations and delivered a note: “After many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision.”
Judge Sullivan brought the jurors into the courtroom, read their message aloud.
“Well, members of the jury, I’ve got your question, and the question is: ‘After many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision,’” Sullivan said.

The judge acknowledged the length of the trial: more than five weeks, over 80-plus witnesses, 300-plus exhibits.
“I brought you back out because I know that this was a long trial. I know there were over 80 witnesses, and over 300 exhibits. Alright?” Sullivan told the jury.
“I’m going to ask you to go back out and continue your deliberations at this time, keeping in mind all of the instructions I gave you,” Sullivan said.
The brief courtroom exchange ended. The jurors returned to deliberate. Sullivan did not declare a mistrial at that point.
Clancy sat in the courtroom in a wheelchair and a beige sweater as the judge addressed the jury. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington and prosecutors were present.
The jury was nine women and three men. They began deliberating Thursday afternoon, continued through Friday and Monday, and resumed Tuesday morning. By the time the note was sent, they had spent roughly 17 to 18 hours deliberating across four calendar days.
Clancy is charged in the January 2023 deaths of her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.

Clancy has admitted to the killings. She argues she was not criminally responsible because of severe postpartum psychosis.
Prosecutors on the other hand contend that she understood her actions and had planning and control.
The charges allow first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter, or not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.
For now, the jury remains deliberating on Sullivan’s instruction to return to the jury room and continue considering the case.
